9 Frequently Asked Questions about Acrylic Block Windows & Privacy, Egress and Decorative Glass Windows

Question 1 – Are acrylic block windows available in fixed and operable styles? Where are some of the best places to use these windows? There is a wide range of opening styles to choose from. You might consider a fixed window above a soaking tub, or a casement (crank out) window in a kitchen or basement, or a single hung window (opens up and down) in the bedroom. Home offices, garages, hallways, foyers and basements are also popular places to use the blocks. Other styles include slider (opens side to side), awning (opens up), hopper (opens in), radius (round top) and eyebrow (Arch top) type windows.

Design tip – If you're debating between an operable or fixed window – go with the operability feature (it is most flexible style for you or the next homeowner).

Question 2 – What acrylic block sizes, patterns, colored and frosted windows and walls can I choose from?

Sizes – Square blocks are available in 6 x 6 x 2", 6" x 6" x 3", and 8" x 8" x 2", and 8" x 8" x 3" dimensions. You can even design with a completely sealed triangular shape. Vinyl framed windows use 2" acrylic block thicknesses while aluminum framed windows use 2" & 3" block thicknesses.

Design tip – If you're looking to keep project costs down it is best to design with the 8" x 8" sizes.

Question 3 – What types of window frame colors can I choose from? Do you offer accessories to make larger windows or to work with imperfect openings? Choose between vinyl and aluminum framed windows. If you've got larger or imperfect sized openings you may need an H mullion or head/frame/sill expander to make your project work.

Vinyl frames come in white and tan.

Design & installation tip – If you're looking for a lower cost window or operability for fresh air choose the vinyl framed window. For additional rigidity choose the aluminum framed window.

Question 4 – Do you have new construction or replacement acrylic block windows to protect against excessive sun and improve energy efficiency as well? Yes. The "E3 SunBlock" window combines the best of both worlds - solar heat reduction and the improved insulation of a triple glazed window. This window is Energy Star Qualified in most areas. Available in new construction fixed window sizes and replacement windows on a special order basis.

Question 5 – Do you have a basement egress acrylic block window? – If you're looking to meet or exceed building code requirements for an egress window (which require an operable window space of 5.7 square feet or larger) with a high degree of privacy and contemporary look an acrylic block casement window is an excellent solution. If you don't have enough space to meet an egress requirement consider a slider, hopper or fixed acrylic basement window.

Design tip – If you're designing with 6" acrylic blocks you'll need a 37" x 49" or larger window to meet the BOCA or UBS codes. If you're designing with 8" acrylic blocks you'll need a 39" x 47" or larger size to meet code.

Question 6 – Do you offer any architectural decorative art glass windows? If so, what shapes and patterns are there to choose from? What level of privacy do these windows provide? If you're looking for a way to "dress up" a bathroom, kitchen, bedroom or hallway our line of decorative art glass windows may be just what you've been looking for. These triple glazed, tempered glass windows not only qualify for use in wet spaces (like kitchens and baths) but they also add a high level of privacy and dramatic architectural style to any room.

Available in oval, octagon, square and rectangular shapes, a wide range of patterns, and decorative caming secured in the middle window of the triple glazed system. An obscure outside glass texture adds privacy and eliminates the cost of window treatments.

Design Tip - Combine privacy with functionality by choosing an operable awning or casement style.

Question 7 – Are acrylic block and decorative glass privacy windows hard to install? Can these windows be installed in replacement and new construction projects? These lighter weight windows are easier to handle than traditional glass blocks. Vinyl frames are manufactured with integral nailing fins for new construction rough openings or without for replacement projects.

Design Tip – For new construction windows call for the standard rough opening sizes before the framing process begins.

Question 8 – What is the quality of the acrylic blocks, frames, and caulking? How do I know they will stand the test of time? Using the highest quality acrylic, mechanically applied sealant, sturdy aluminum and vinyl frames our windows are backed by a 10 year limited warranty.

Question 9 – Do you offer any privacy windows that don't require the removal of the existing window? Yes. With privacy block shutters made of a cellular PVC composite an interior privacy window can be installed on the inside of your bathroom, home office or bedroom. This product installs like a shutter in about 20 minutes and will reduce glare, UV rays and brightness.
